    Tropic of Capricorn (23 1/2ºS)

    Antarctic Circle (66 1/2ºS)

The most important line is known as the Prime or Greenwich Meridian.

The distance from one line to another varies as one moves away from the Equator towards the poles.

    Arctic Circle (66 1/2ºN)

    Tropic of Cancer (23 1/2ºN)

These are imaginary lines drawn on maps or globes, running from North to South.

In total, there are 180 lines, 90 of them to the North and 90 of them to the South of the Equator.

The International Date line follows line 180º. Dates are calculated from it.
